A type of genetic molecule barely on the radar screen of scientists a decade ago has recently emerged as a major player in cancer biology.

Known as micro RNA (miRNA) because they consist of short strands of ribonucleic acid (RNA), these molecules have been revealed to play a big role in the outcome of cancer growth and cell proliferation in various tumours. Mutations to miRNAs, known as ‘oncomirs’, have been identified as the specific miRNAs which are associated with cancer.
